Let’s assume the compensation included in your offer is what you expected or even higher. It even includes non-cash driven compensation, such as extra vacation time and stock options. Now it is time to figure out how your offer complements your family piece. Even if you are single, everybody has some type of family responsibility from humans to four-legged cuties. We normally do not live in a silo without affecting other people’s lives. Thus, it is imperative that with any offer being considered you ask, “How does it work with my family needs?” For example, this is the time to figure out what are the normal hours of operation at the company. Human resources might have shared the office hours; however, are they truly followed? Or, if they are followed, how much extra time is required outside of the office to get your job done? We live in a world where an eight-hour work day is unheard of. We all take work home. But is the work excessive? When I was an engineer, there was an oil company known in the community for pushing employees to work on holidays, evenings, Saturdays, and Sundays. People like myself, who felt strongly about our path, stayed away from the company. If offered a position, I simply could not be part of that business regardless of how high the salary would be.

These days, companies anticipate their employees to work 9-10+ hour days. Many times the long days include work outside the office. How can you determine if the company that offered you the job has an environment that recognizes and helps you nurture your family piece? To begin researching this information, I recommend simply asking the individuals you know in the company. If you do not know a company employee, ask your network. I bet you already know someone with connections to the company in question. Additionally, engage in the online world and see if there are any comments or discussions about the company’s culture and environment. Do the same on your social media channels. Go to Twitter and follow hashtags the organization uses regularly for marketing and public relations purposes. And, last but not least, take a day in the middle of the week and check out how many cars or lights you can see after 6 p.m. at the office.

In Alexandra’s case, she was in the midst of planning her wedding. Before she took the job, I encouraged her to discuss with her fiancé what life would look like if she took the job. Part of her new responsibilities would require community outreach. This called for evenings and weekend work. How would these extra hours affect their marriage? Would her husband be accepting of several weekends a year where she would be working and not at home? How would these off-hour responsibilities affect her involvement with other family members? There are no right or wrong answers to these questions. Every person has their own answers that work best for their family situation.

With an upcoming wedding, there are time requirements associated with event planning and the honeymoon.
